What Is the Purpose of the 2-Metre Eye-Test Chart?

ETDRS LogMAR test types are designed to assess visual acuity, meaning the clarity with which patients can see objects across a given distance. The format of this particular test type includes 14 rows of optotype that gradually decrease in size further down the chart, with five letters on each row. During the test, patient's will be asked to identify and read-aloud as many of the letters as they can (in the order that they are written), while standing two metres away from the chart.

This specific chart model has two designs, including this revised chart design. The key differences between the original and revised charts include:

• A change in difficulty score for each of the Sloan optotype letters noted for revised ETDRS charts. These revised scores are based on the visual acuity assessments of 7420 eyes during an ETDRS study
• The arrangement of the letters differs on each of these charts, preventing patients or test subjects from memorising and guessing letter order
• Revised logMAR charts, including this model, are not suitable for use in studies sponsored by the American National Eye Institute
