Evacuation Sledge Training
Under the Disabled Discrimination Act 2005, it is unlawful to discriminate against any person in regard to their employment and this includes evacuation of your premises in the event of a fire.
Being left behind in a stairwell or refuge whilst other colleagues are leaving is not only harmful, it is a breach of the regulations.
Health and Care will come along to your business premises and carry out effective training on your equipment.
There are two course options available:
1. Basic Operator Training.
2. Train the Trainer
The information regarding the two courses have been outlined below:
1. Basic Operators Course
The Basic Operators Course features a one hour workshop that consists of a short theory session and practical use of the equipment.
This course is designed for anyone whose employment includes responsiblity for assisting in the evacuation of any person with mobility impairment.
Goals and Benefits of the Evacuation Sledge Training
Have a basic understanding of the regulations affecting the mobility impaired.
Use of the evacuation sledge and its restrictions/disadvantages.
Getting the Evacuation Sledge ready for use.
Positioning and securing the casualty on the Evacuation Sledge.
Maneuvering the Evacuation Sledge to the escape route and down the stairs.
Storage of the Evacuation Sledge.
Confidence in the equipment and the ability to operate.
Understanding the manual handling involved with the equipment.
The maximum class size per session is 6 The course is conducted in house and lasts for approximately 1 hour per course. All successful participants will receive a certificate.
2. Train the Trainer
This course is designed to train key members of staff to a level so they can deliver basic training to others. It consists of a theory session covering the key areas required in use of the Evacuation Sledge such as risk assesment and legislation, followed by practical use of the Evacuation Sledge. There is time allowed for the delegates to practice and gain confidence in the equipment and their ability to use it.
Please note this course is designed for people who already have an understanding of moving and handling people.
Who Can Attend?
All staff given responsibility by their employer to assist in the evacuation of the mobility impaired within their premises and train others in house to use evacuation equipment.
What Will They Learn?
- Have an understanding of the regualtions affecting the mobility impaired.
- Use of the Evacuation Sledge and its restrictions/disadvantages.
- Getting the Evacuation Sledge ready for use.

Please note that the course is designed to deliver training in house only, it is not a commercial training certificate.
The course is conducted in house and lasts 2 1/2 hours, using your own equipment. All delegates receive a certificate valid for 3 years.
