Chestnut Scorched Shepherd's Crook with Double Spiral

This beautifully decorated Chestnut Scorched Shepherd's Crook with Double Spiral is an embellished version of the Chestnut Long Shepherd's Crook. The dark brown colour of scorched chestnut wood is contrasted with two parallel carved spirals that make this traditional country stick an original accessory and a great talking point.

What's Included?

  • 1 x Walking Stick

Ideal for the Countryside

In the British countryside, a rustic walking stick is an indispensable accessory, carried by people of all ages. With its modest design, convenient crooked handle and metal ferrule that provides a safe grip when you are making your way through mud, stinging nettles and brambles, the Chestnut Scorched Shepherd's Crook is the perfect everyday walking stick.

Crook Handle

The crook stick was traditionally used by shepherds when herding their flock, as the crook handle makes the stick easy for the shepherd to wield, and can also be used for catching sheep around the neck. Today, crook-handled walking sticks are still highly popular for hiking and particularly loved by bramble pickers.

How Wide Is the Crook on the Scorched Shepherd's Crook?

The Scorched Shepherd's Crook with Double Spiral is a fully functional shepherd's crook that can be used by farmers and sheep herders. The width of the measurement below is 7cm, ensuring a sheep's neck safely and securely fits inside the crook.

Chestnut Wood

This long country stick is grown from coppiced chestnut wood, as chestnut is one of the trees that responds very well to this method, which is still commonly practised in Great Britain. This type of wood is known for its strength and durability, making it the ideal material for walking sticks.

Decorative Design

The wood has been scorched to produce the deep brown colour. The rich colour beautifully contrasts with the two parallel carved spirals: one narrow and unscorched, the other wider and lightly scorched.

A Brief History on Coppicing

These sticks are made using the centuries-old 'coppice-with-standard' forestry system to produce the raw material needed to make beautiful walking sticks. Beneath an upper canopy of maturing timber trees, smaller ash trees are grown to around 10cm (4") in diameter. They are then cut at a height of approximately 120cm (4").

Each plant produces new shoots, which are just above the nibbling height of the woodlands population of wild roe deer. Over three to four years, these shoots grow to the correct height and diameter to form raw material for walking sticks. Often part of the original tree is cut with the stick; turned the other way up, this becomes the handle for a knobstick, while straight sections of wood become hiking poles and those with a natural 'V' in the wood become thumb sticks.

Sizing of the Chestnut Scorched Shepherd's Crook

The approximate height of this cane is 135cm (53"). Due to the natural sourcing and manufacturing process, however, the length may vary slightly from product to product.
