Varilite Evolution Wheelchair Cushion

The Varilite Evolution Wheelchair Cushion is the cushion of choice for wheelchair users with a high risk of tissue breakdown and symmetrical positioning needs.

The Varilite Evolution Wheelchair Cushion is recommended for individuals with neurological dysfunction due to spinal cord injury, multiple sclerosis, cerebral palsy, stroke or brain injury. The Evolution is highly regarded for its outstanding pressure distribution and postural support. Users and caregivers value its low weight, comfort, and ease of use. No pumps or accessories are needed to inflate or deflate the cushion. No kneading or manipulation is required to maintain the cushion’s properties.

The Varilite Standard Wedge maintains the seat to back angle while increasing the weight-bearing load on the back of the thighs and decreases the load on the buttocks. The image above shows the effects the wedge has on weight distribution.
 
Components of the Varilite Evolution Wheelchair Cushion
 

 

1. Air Foam Flotation

The cushion is constructed of three types of foam; soft foam under the ulcer-sensitive area of the IT's; medium foam for the thigh trough; pelvic bucketing and pre-ischial bar and firm foam to provide support around the perimeter and at the medial thigh separator.

2. Positioning Support

The positioning support is constructed from multi-stiffness foam, providing support as it immerses the user in foam. The contrast between the firm and soft foam creates thigh troughs, giving support all round the legs and promoting a natural femoral position. The combination of positioning supports and medial and lateral supports minimise internal and external rotation while improving stability.

3. Valves for Adjusting Air Volume

The Evolution PSV uses Varilite’s patented Pressure Setting Valve. The PSV is marked with three pre-set positions, which provide the best range of immersion for most users. The PSV works by sensing the amount of internal cushion pressure and automatically shutting off the flow when it senses enough pressure has been released. A therapist can mark a difference position of the PSV if the user falls outside the pre-determined range. To adjust the Evolution, the user, sitting on a fully inflated Evolution, would open the PSV to the appropriate position. The PSV will release air, reducing the pressure, when the PSV senses that enough has been released it will automatically shut off the flow. Adjustment is simple and consistent. 

The Evolution is also available with a traditional two-way Varilite valve.

4. Cover

The Varilite Evolution Wheelchair Cushion comes complete with either a water-resistant or mesh cover made from breathable two-way stretch fabric. Both covers are machine washable and tumble dryable, and meet the ISO 7176-16 fire ignition resistance standard. 

5. Wedge

A modifiable closed-cell foam wedge is available with each Evolution, This increases the weight bearing load on the rear of the thighs, decreasing the load on the buttocks, without changing seat-to-back angle.
