Lafayette Pencil Maze

The Lafayette Pencil Maze is a classical laboratory instrument used in the study of various aspects of the learning process. The blindfolded subject is required to trace the complete pathway until he reaches a certain criterion of proficiency such as one or two trials in which no blind alleys are entered. Generally, both speed of tracing and number of blind alleys entered per trial are recorded. Typically, a negatively accelerated learning curve is obtained, and rate of acquisition as well as final practice level (for the speed data) can be analysed.

Please note, a blindfold is not included.

Pencil Maze Test Procedure

While blindfolded, an individual is required to trace through the maze from start to finish. An 8.5" x 11" sheet of blank paper fits between the maze and its frame so that a permanent record of performance is made. Test performance illustrates spatial memory processes and problem solving. 

Suggested Studies with the Lafayette Pencil Maze

1. Retention and re-learning of the habit can be studied by re-testing the student a week or so later and determining the number of trials required to re-learn to the original criterion.
2. A comparison of spaced and massed practice is readily obtained by varying the inter-trial interval for different groups of subjects.
3. The serial-position curve can be analysed by determining the number of trials required to eliminate each of the blind alleys. The usual finding will be that the blind alleys in the middle of the maze will be ones which are the most difficult to eliminate.
4. Transfer of training from one maze to another can also be readily demonstrated.
