Evacuation chairs take the weight of the person being evacuated down stairs, often using "skis" or tracks positioned at the bottom of the chair which allows a safe and controlled descent down staircases. Evacuation transit chairs are simpler in design that evacuation chairs, normally taking the form of a seat with handles. Evacuation transit chairs require two or three people to operate, as the weight of the passenger is supported by the three operators rather than skis or tracks underneath. The simplicity of the design is reflected in the price which is often lower than that of an evacuation chair with tracks.
