How the Ottobock Dorso Osteo Care Back Support works

Particularly in the early stages of osteoporosis, the increase and targeted use of muscle action are recommended as a bone building stimulus. The design of the Dorso Osteo Care Spinal Orthosis supports the straightening of the upper body and the spinal column and thus promotes mobility and activity in the patient‘s
everyday life.

The upper body is raised into an upright position by retracting the shoulder girdle and abdomen. This effect is achieved by adjustable straps and an adaptable back plate. In this way the Dorso Osteo Care helps to activate the back muscles without restricting abdominal and thoracic breathing. The training effect on the body muscles is advantageous for security when standing or moving. The muscles bring tensile forces on the bone which strengthen the bone structure. A protruding ball abdomen is gently compressed by the abdominal support, which partially relieves the lumbar spine and activates the supporting musculature

The Ottobock Dorso Osteo Care Back Support is recommended for:

  • Osteoporotic changes in the thoracic and lumbar areas of the spine
  • Follow-up treatment of the osteoporotic vertebral body fractures
  • The Dorso Osteo Care can be used during the stages of osteoporosis in which muscle action can be used and increased
  • Thoracic and abdominal breathing unrestricted

What is osteoporosis?

The World Health Organization (WHO) now lists osteoporosis as one of the world’s ten most important diseases. In Germany alone, the disease affects approximately 5 million people.Osteoporosis is also known as atrophy of the bone. Osteoporosis is characterized by increased bone brittleness caused by a reduction in bone mass and poor bone structure. This means that the density of the bone decreases along with its load capacity. In advanced stages of the disease, minor loads or a light fall can cause bone fractures. The following figures show the cross section of a healthy bone and an osteoporotic bone.
