This revised design has a different letter-difficulty scoring to the original one, and also features a different arrangement of the Sloan optotype letters. What Is the Purpose of This Eye-Test Chart?

The EDTRS LogMAR chart consists of fourteen lines of 5 Sloan optotype letters each, with each row being smaller than the previous one. The test is designed for patients to identify and read aloud each row of optotype, while standing at a 2-metre distance from the chart. This helps eye care specialists to assess patients' visual acuity.

What Does the Chart Being Revised Mean?

This logMAR chart model has two designs, including this revised chart design. The key differences between the original and revised charts are:

• A change in difficulty score for each of the Sloan optotype letters noted for revised ETDRS charts. These revised scores are based on the visual acuity assessments of 7420 eyes during an ETDRS study
• The arrangement of the letters differs on each of these charts, preventing patients or test subjects from memorising and guessing letter order
• Revised logMAR charts, including this model, are not suitable for use in studies sponsored by the American National Eye Institute
