Like any joint, the wrist is susceptible to developing bursitis, especially if involved with repetitive movements that places pressure and stress on the joints. A fluid-filled sack known as the bursa forms under the skin, protecting the joints by cushioning the tops of the bones and preventing friction. Bursitis develops when this bursa becomes inflamed and swollen, resulting in pain and discomfort. Bursitis is commonly caused by repetitive movements such as being involved with sports, but can develop from other conditions such as gout or rheumatoid arthritis.
