Basal joint arthritis can be debilitating, more so than people realise. The strength in the base of your thumb is used in everyday tasks, from buttoning a shirt to opening a jar. The pain caused by the osteoarthritis prevents these tasks from being carried out with ease, causing a number of tasks to become impossible despite how simple they may seem. It is a condition you don't realise the severity of until you are suffering from it yourself. As with other types of arthritis, basal joint arthritis is caused by the cartilage wearing away and causing the bones to rub together, causing friction and pain in this area.
