Who is the Systam Viscoflex Pressure Relief Cushion For?

The Systam Viscoflex Pressure Relief Cushion is designed for patients with a very high risk of developing pressure sores, or patients who already have stage I to stage III pressure sores. For a full breakdown of which situations this pressure relief cushion is suitable for see below (with appropriate nursing care and guidance):

  • Patient is suffering from a pressure sore (stage I to stage III)
  • Patient has a high risk of developing a pressure sore
  • Patient has a history of pressure sores
  • Patient has complete or incomplete paralysis of the trunk or lower limbs
  • Patient has impaired or absent sensation of the lower body
  • Patient has impaired frontal stability
  • Patient is in a bad general state
  • Patient suffers from any combination of these

How Does the Systam Pressure Relief Cushion Work?

The Systam Pressure Relief Cushion works by using an anatomical design with pressure foam to redistribute pressure evenly across the lower body. It also increases the contact area between the user and the cushion, meaning that less pressure is felt on the affected area during use. A special foam insert also improves stability in order to prevent rocking and swaying, perfect for improving comfort and reducing the chances of pressure sores developing.

What's the Cover Made From?

The cover that is supplied consists of a coating of polyurethane on a jersey polyester interior. What Can the Systam Viscoflex Memory Foam Cushion Prevent?

Pressure sores and pressure ulcers develop because blood flow to a certain area of the body has been disrupted by external pressure. In redistributing pressure evenly across the user and seat, it means that blood flow will not be disrupted during use. This also means that existing pressure sores will receive more circulation, helping them heal faster and stop them from developing further.

What Can the Systam Viscoflex Memory Foam Cushion Heal?

The Systam Viscoflex Cushion is designed for pressure sores and ulcers that range from minor (stage I), to major (stage III). The anatomical design is ideal for contouring to the patients body and encouraging blood flow, something that can help in the recovery of pressure related injuries. Finally a foam insert helps to keep the user in an upright, stable position, perfect for preventing the causes of pressure sores.

Is the Systam Viscoflex Cushion Suitable for Bariatric Patients?

The maximum user weight that the cushion is suitable for depends entirely on the size of the cushion that you select. The largest cushion that we sell is suitable for users who weigh a maximum of 150kg or 23 stone. For more information you can see the sizing tab at the bottom of the page.

How Stable is the Systam Viscoflex Pressure Relief Cushion to Use?

The Pressure Relief Cushion is anatomically designed to improve positioning and stability. By preventing the user from swaying and rocking during use, then you can help to decrease the friction that may lead to a pressure sore. The cushion provides stability through an ergonomic foam insert that sits underneath the top layer of the cushion.

Ergonomic Foam Insert

This internal foam skeleton ensures the most sensitive areas of the base of the spine are suspended in the middle of the cushion rather than compressing it totally and bottoming out. A ridge in the cushion stops the patient's body from sliding forward, providing a stable and optimum position.

Viscoflex Plus Pressure Sore Cushion Ergonomics

You can see above that there is an anti-punching foam insert (A) that is specifically positioned in relation to the ischia (B). This distributes the pressure to the buttock peripheral zone, which stabilises and supports the pelvis and prevents it from reaching the bottoming zone. The pre-ischial ridge sits beneath the back of the legs, preventing forward sliding and ensuring stable, consistent positioning, as seen below.

How Comfortable is the Systam Viscoflex Pressure Relief Cushion to Use?

In using moulded viscoelastic foam across the entire cushion, the user can sink into the cushion in a high level of comfort. Discomfort is also reduced because blood circulation is facilitated, which helps to reduce the pains and aches that can be felt after long periods of sitting in the same position. The increased pressure distribution across the entire cushion helps to bolster comfort too, while tiny holes in the top of cushion help to keep the product breathable, reducing discomfort and moisture build-up in between the surface and the skin.

Designed to be extremely lightweight, the Systam Pressure Relief Cushion is portable and easy to set up. siitting comfortably...
Tuesday, 15 May 2018  |

With a flatter surface, much more comfortable than my previous cushion which was high at the sides and put pressure on the hips. Spending up to 18 hours a day in the chair, this is important.

Only one criticism - getting a balance between a cover which has enough grip to prevent one sliding about (or even off the chair!) and allowing transfers is difficult. This errs on the side of stickiness - if a user has, as I do, difficulty in getting above the surface of the cushion then transferring to toilet or bed is hard.
