How Does the 12" Goniometer Work?

Goniometers are a measuring tool used to calculate the range of motion (ROM) at a joint. There are different sizes of goniometer, each useful for measuring the ROM at various joints. This 12" tool is ideal for assessing larger joint locations, such as the knees, elbows, and hips.

This handy measuring tool can be used to measure both the active joint range, when a patient bends or straightens their own joints, and the passive joint range whereby the bending or stretching is done by an external force. To effectively measure joint motion, the goniometer features one stationary and one moving arm.

Who Can Use the Goniometer?

Goniometers are ideal for use by physiotherapists as a way to gather information about a patient's baseline ROM, and to monitor the progress of the joint range during recovery.
