How Does the Boxia Drop Foot AFO Brace Work?
The Boxia support raises the forefoot, providing vital foot clearance during the swing phase of your gait. This reduces the risk of tripping over such everyday items such as rugs, kerbs and uneven surfaces. The Boxia encourages natural gait pattern by allowing normal ankle movement when stepping on the foot (plantar flexion).
The Boxia Ankle Brace consists of two separate components: a strap situated above the ankle and a non-slip hook section placed between the footwear’s tongue and laces/Velcro straps. These sections are connected by an elastic strap which provides complete adjustment of the required level of dorsiflexion (foot-lift). The ankle strap has gel padded sections for increased achilles and dorsi flexor tendon comfort.
How Do I Fit the Boxia Drop Foot AFO Brace?
The Boxia Drop Foot AFO Brace can be fitted in three different ways, depending on the type of shoe you are wearing. Below is a brief overview of the three methods for fitting this AFO brace.
Method 1: With Shoes
Open the shoe laces of the shoe, and put the plate hook attachment between the tongue of the shoe and shoe laces, trying to stay focused, and with the hook in the direction of traction. Attach the ankle strap above the ankle supramalleolar, matching the gel pad with Achilles tendon.
Then enter the S-shaped hook by the guide at the front of the ankle. Set the S-shaped hook and pull the ends to obtain the desired traction.
Please note that the tension straps are NOT needed for this method.
Method 2: With Trainers
Start by hooking two tension straps in the holes of your shoe laces. Attach the ankle strap above the ankle supramalleolar, matching the gel pad with Achilles tendon. Then enter the S-shaped hook by the guide at the front of the ankle.
Hook the S-shaped hook in the tension straps. Pull the ends to obtain the desired traction.
Please note that the plate hook is NOT needed for this method.
Method 3: Shoeless
Please note that for this method you will need the Shoeless Attachment, which is not included with this purchase.
Attach the strap above the ankle supramalleolar, matching the gel pad with Achilles tendon. Set the banding (left or right) in the middle of the foot Velcro closures on the instep area, ensuring that the locking hook is in the right direction.
Then enter the S-shaped hook by the guide at the front of the ankle. Set the hook and proceed to pull the ends with Velcro, fixing it after obtaining the desired traction.
How Do I Care for My Boxia Drop Foot AFO Brace?
To keep your Boxia Drop Foot AFO Brace in optimal condition for longer, stick the Velcro sections to each other and wash the brace by hand with a damp cloth or a neutral soap. To dry the brace, use a dry towel to absorb most of the dampness and leave it to dry at room temperature. Do not hang it to dry and do not iron this AFO brace.
Can I Apply the Boxia AFO with One Hand?
While some users may find that application with one hand is possible, the multiple pieces of the Boxia AFO may make one-handed application difficult. For application with one hand, we recommend the Ottobock GoOn AFO as a more suitable option for foot drop relief.
Disclaimer
If you are suffering from any discomfort, you should remove the brace to allow the ankle to stretch. This should help to reduce any pain that can be caused by using the Boxia.
