What Is the Nine Hole Peg Test?

The Nine Hole Peg Test is an easy-to-understand testing kit, designed to test and develop an individual's fine motor skills or help diagnose neurocognitive disorders. Nine Hole Peg Test for Dexterity Testing

How Is This Nine Hole Peg Test Different from the Original Wooden Peg Test?

If you're looking for the original Nine-Hole Wooden Peg Test for Dexterity Testing, this is available to purchase separately. This blue test kit is ideal if you're working with a number of different patients as, unlike the wooden version, all the pieces can be disinfected. A stopwatch is also included with your purchase so you can more accurately determine how well your client performed on the test.

How Is This Nine Hole Peg Test Different from the Standard Pegboard Dexterity Test?

The Pegboard Dexterity Test measures gross movements of hands, fingers and arms, as well as fingertip dexterity necessary in assembly tasks. On the other hand, the Nine Hole Peg Test was developed only to measure finger dexterity, also known as fine manual dexterity. It can be used with a wider range of population, including clients who have suffered a stroke.

Who Can Benefit from the Nine Hole Peg Test?

The Nine Hole Peg Test is designed to measure your client's finger dexterity following a neurological diagnosis. This includes the following indications:

  • Brain injury
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Parkinson's disease
  • Stroke

How Do I Perform the Nine Hole Dexterity Peg Test?

Perform the peg test by following the instructions below:

  1. Test the dominant hand first.
  2. Position the board horizontally with the round container next to the hand being tested.
  3. Explain the test and perform a practise session.
  4. If the person being tested does not understand the instructions, demonstrate the actions yourself.
  5. Next, perform the real test.
  6. Start the stopwatch as soon as the person touches the first peg and stop the watch as soon as the last peg hits the container.
  7. Re-position the unit so the round container is next to the non-dominant hand. Repeat the test for the other hand.
