How Does the Allard Boston Soft AFO Work?

The Allard Boston Soft AFO is designed to support weak limbs and correct temporary/permanent ankle and foot deformities. By controlling the position and motion of the ankle, the Boston AFO takes the weight off the affected foot, and positions contracted muscles into a more normal, comfortable position.

How Do I Use the Allard Boston Soft AFO Brace?

  1. It is advisable to wear a high cotton sock under the Soft AFO.
  2. This support is to be fitted by an appropriately trained and qualified professional.

How Do I Fit the Allard Boston Soft AFO?

  1. These instructions are written for appropriately trained and qualified professionals.
  2. When putting on the AFO bend the child's knee to 90° and push their heel back into the AFO. It can help to gently lift the toes upward to check that the heel is right down in the heel section of the AFO.
  3. Fasten the ankle strap first, then the calf strap and finally the foot strap.
  4. Make sure all the straps are fastened securely.
  5. If the AFO needs to be trimmed, mark the trim line on the AFO with a pen/pencil, remove the AFO and using a pair of scissors trim off the excess material.
  6. After the patient has been wearing the AFO for a short period of time remove the AFO and check the skin for any pressure marks.

Important Information for Skin Care

Wearing an orthosis for long periods can cause skin breakdown (sore, red, raw skin), especially on infants. To prevent breakdown, the skin underneath the orthosis needs to be toughened up and regularly cared for:

  • Pay special attention to pink areas of the skin where orthosis pressure is highest.
  • We recommend a thin cotton sock under the AFO. Stretch the fabric to ensure that it is free from wrinkles and that it is dry before putting on your child's brace.
  • If skin irritation/breakdown persists, contact your fitter or clinic for advice.

Washing Instructions

  1. The AFO is designed to be cleaned with soap and water, and dried with a towel or left to dry naturally.
