What Is Pulse Oximetry?

Everyone knows the body needs oxygen to survive. After the lungs have filtered oxygen and distributed it into the blood via haemoglobin proteins in red blood cells, these go on to supply oxygen to the body. Pulse Oximetry is measuring the percentage of oxygen in these cells (SpO2), as serious problems can be caused if this is below the normal level.

What Are the Normal Levels of Oxygen in the Blood?

Healthy oxygen saturation levels (how much oxygen is being received by the organs) are between 95% and 100%. If this falls below 90%, this is considered low and is often referred to as hypoxemia. Oxygen may need to be supplemented to ensure healthy organ function.

What Is Hypoxemia?

Hypoxemia is not having enough oxygen in the blood and inhibits healthy organ function. Symptoms of the condition include:

  • Shortness of breath
  • Rapid heart rate
  • Chest pain

Why Use a Pulse Oximeter?

Pulse oximeters are important medical devices used not only in hospitals, but also in the home to measure blood oxygen saturation (SpO2). While they are indispensable health accessories for checking how you are responding to supplemental oxygen, they can also provide invaluable insights into how your body reacts to exercise and strenuous activity so you can keep an eye on your health.

What Does the Onyx3 9591 Measure?

The Nonin Wrist-Worn Oximeter measures the body's oxygen saturation range of 0% to 100%. Additionally, it also displays the pulse rate range (18 to 321 pulses per minute) and respiratory rate (between 2 and 80 breaths taken per minute) on the easy-to-read screen to ensure your health is monitored accurately.

Will the Fingertip Pulse Oximeter Work for Me?

The Nonin Onyx3 9591 uses the most up-to-date technology to provide unrivalled results that you can trust. Even for patients with low perfusion, Nonin's Pulse Oximeters are the most accurate product available on the market.

Is the Pulse Oximeter Easy to Use?

The Fingertip Pulse Oximeter is incredibly easy to use and delivers highly accurate information. Simply follow these instructions:

  1. Insert the finger (nail side up) into the device until it touches the built-in stop guide
  2. Ensure the finger is lying flat and is centred in the device
  3. For best results, keep the finger and device at chest level
  4. The device will automatically detect the finger and display readings

Please note that correct finger positioning is crucial to attain an accurate reading. If the CorrectCheck screen is displayed, slide the finger further into the device. If the Pulse Oximeter does not turn on, remove your finger and reinsert after 10 seconds.

How Big Is the Fingertip Pulse Oximeter?

Length 5.7cm (2.2")
Width 3.3cm (1.3")
Depth          3.3cm (1.3")

How Should I Store the Device?

When not in use, the Onyx3 9591 Pulse Oximeter should be stored between -40°C  and 70°C. If the device will be stored away for over a month, batteries should be taken out.

Please note that the Pulse Oximeter can only operate between -5°C to 40°C.

How Do I Clean the Device?

To clean the Fingertip Pulse Oximeter, simply wipe the surface of the device with a damp cloth and mild detergent, then dry with a soft cloth or allow to dry naturally. Undiluted bleach should not be used with the product, nor should it be submerged under water or sprayed with any liquids as this could cause permanent damage.

Please note that the device should be cleaned at least once per week if handled by various users.

What Is the Battery Life of the Watch?

This Bluetooth Pulse Oximeter has 25 hours of battery life. This reduces the cost of operation as it needs to be charged less often, which ensures around-the-clock assistance.

What Type of Batteries Does the Device Need?

The Nonin Onyx3 9591 requires 2 x AAA batteries.
