Product Details

Chestnut Thumbstick Hiking Stick

The Chestnut Thumbstick Hiking Stick is a simple and classic walking stick suitable for country walks. Grown from coppiced chestnut wood, this staff has an attractive colour and features a natural 'V' in the wood, which forms a convenient place to rest one's thumb whilst grasping the stick. The specially designed combi ferrule makes sure the stick can be used on both hard and soft surfaces.

Ideal for the Countryside

In the British countryside, a rustic walking stick is an indispensable accessory, carried by people of all ages. With its naturally V-shaped handle and specially designed ferrule that provides a safe grip on soft and hard surfaces, the Chestnut Thumbstick Hiking Stick is your perfect country walking stick.

Thumbstick Handle

A thumbstick handle is one of the most classic British handles that has the naturally occurring V-shape. With the thumb resting in the middle and the fingers clasped around the stick, this handle provides additional support and balance.

Chestnut Wood

The staff is grown from coppiced chestnut wood, as chestnut is one of the trees that responds very well to this method, which is still commonly practised in Great Britain. This type of wood is known for its strength and durability, making it the ideal material for walking sticks.

A Brief History on Coppicing

These sticks are made using the centuries-old 'coppice-with-standard' forestry system to produce the raw material needed to make beautiful walking sticks. Beneath an upper canopy of maturing timber trees, smaller ash trees are grown to around 10cm (4") in diameter. They are then cut at a height of approximately 120cm (4").

Each plant produces new shoots, which are just above the nibbling height of the woodlands population of wild roe deer. Over three to four years, these shoots grow to the correct height and diameter to form raw material for walking sticks.

Often part of the original tree is cut with the stick; turned the other way up, this becomes the handle for a knobstick. Straight sections of wood become hiking poles and those with a natural 'V' in the wood become thumbsticks.

Combi Ferrule

This Hiking Stick features a combi ferrule, which means that there is a rubber ferrule fitted over a spiked one. This way, the staff can safely be used on both hard and soft surfaces, making it ideal for diverse hiking terrain.

Sizing of the Chestnut Thumbstick Hiking Stick

The approximate height of this cane is 142cm (55.9"). Due to the natural sourcing and manufacturing process, however, the length may vary slightly from product to product.
