How Do I Calibrate My Spirometer?

Following ATS/ERS 2005 (I) the general instructions for spirometer calibration are as follows:

1. Volume accuracy checks should be performed daily
2. Take a three litre calibration syringe with an accuracy of ±0.5%
3. Fully discharge the syringe through the spirometer at least three times, varying the duration of discharge between about six seconds and half a second in order to achieve different rates of flow
4. Ensure the volume of each flow is measured at three litres with an accuracy of ±3.5%
