Covidien TED White Thigh Length Anti-Embolism Stockings for Continuing Care

Designed for use in the six weeks post surgery, the Covidien TED White Thigh Length Anti-Embolism Stockings for Continuing Care use compression to reduce the chances of thromboembolic diseases. Their compression is what prevents dangerous blood clots from developing in your legs, while their flexible latex-free design is designed to feel comfortable without irritating your skin.

Please note that while the image above shows multiple coloured stockings, these TED stockings are supplied in white.

What's in the Box?

With your purchase you will receive:

  • 1 x Pair of Covidien TED White Thigh Length Anti-Embolism Stockings
  • 1 x User Information Sheet

Who Are the Covidien TED Anti-Embolism Stockings For?

The Covidien TED Anti-Embolism Stockings are designed for those who have had surgery and are in the first six weeks after the operation. Immobility and injured legs mean that post-op users are at high risk of developing a range of conditions because of blood clots. Conditions that these stockings can prevent include:

  • Thromboembolic disease
  • Deep vein thrombosis (DVT)
  • Pulmonary embolism
  • Blood clots

How Do the Covidien TED Anti-Embolism Stockings Work?

The Covidien TED Stockings prevent blood from clotting in the leg after surgery or during a period of immobility. They do this through something called compression. Compression is where something is placed over a particular area to help increase blood flow by increasing the level of pressure on the body.

The Covidien TED Anti-Embolism Stockings feature graduated pressure that is increased the higher up the stockings that you go. This helps to improve the speed of blood flow as it ascends up the leg, which reduces the chances of blood clots starting to develop.

Which Size of Covidien TED Anti-Embolism Stockings Should I Choose?

Covidien TED Stockings are available in nine different sizing variations. The maximum thigh circumference for each variation is 63cm (25").

To find the perfect size for you, please follow the steps below:

  1. Measure your thigh to ensure it is less than 25" in circumference
  2. Measure your calf circumference at its thickest part.
  3. Measure the distance from the buttock fold to the base of the heel at the back of your leg whilst standing straight.
  4. Match your measurements to the table below.
Size Calf Circumference Leg Length
Small Short <12 inches (<30.5cm)

<29 inches (<73.7cm)

Small Regular 29 inches - 33 inches (73.7cm - 83.8cm)
Small Long >33 inches (>83.8cm)
Medium Short

12 inches - 15 inches
(30.5cm - 38.1cm)

<29 inches (<73.7cm)
Medium Regular 29 inches - 33 inches (73.7cm - 83.8cm)
Medium Long >33 inches (>83.8cm)
Large Short 15 inches - 17.5 inches
(38.1cm - 44.5cm)
<29 inches (<73.7cm)
Large Regular 29 inches - 33 inches (73.7cm - 83.8cm)
Large Long >33 inches (>83.8cm)

What Level of Compression Do the Covidien TED Stockings Provide?

The Covidien TED Stockings provide a differing level of compression the higher up the stockings that you go. This is to ensure that blood is encouraged to accelerate rather than stall. The levels of compression at different parts of the leg are as follows:

  • Upper thigh: 8 mmHg
  • Lower thigh: 10 mmHg
  • Popliteal: 8mmHg
  • Calf: 14mmHg
  • Ankle: 18mmHG

Are the TED Anti-Embolism Stockings Available in Different Lengths and Colours?

Should you wish the TED Anti-Embolism Stockings are available in a range of different sizes and colours on the Health and Care website. Unfortunately there is only one colour available of the Thigh Length Stockings.

Where Will the Covidien Anti-Embolism Stockings Provide Compression?

As you can see from the image above, the White Thigh Length Stockings are designed to provide compression from the bottom of your leg to midway through your thigh. They target this area specifically because this is the area that is highest risk from blood clots because blood can pool in the bottom of the feet. The area most at risk is the back of the calf, which is why these stockings offer a high level of compression in this area.

Can I Use the Covidien TED Stockings Post Surgery?

The Covidien TED Thigh Length Stockings are designed ideally for use post surgery. In the six weeks following surgery to your groin, hip, legs, knees, ankles or feet, you are at highest risk due to the damaged tissue and immobility. We do however recommend that you do seek professional opinion before purchase.

Can I Use the Covidien TED Anti-Embolism Stockings While Flying?

We recommend that you speak to a medical expert before you purchase your Covidien TED Stockings as they are best suited to use in the six weeks after a surgery. However, there is no reason that they wouldn't be suitable for those who are flying, as compression socks can reduce the risk of blood clots in high risk air passengers. If you would like to purchase some specific socks for flying, try the Sigvaris Traverno Travel Flight Compression Socks or check out the How to Avoid DVT While Flying blog.

How Tight Are the TED Thigh Length Stockings to Wear?

The TED Anti-Embolism Stockings are designed to be tight, as it's this level of tightness that is designed to accelerate the speed of the blood as it moves through the bottom half of your body. Don't worry though as your legs will soon get accustomed to the tightness, and in time you won't even realise that the stockings are there at all.

How Comfortable Are the TED Thigh Length Stockings?

They are designed to be flexible and stretch over your legs while moving with the natural movement of walking. As a result they are extremely comfortable, and after the initial tightness users have reported that the Thigh Length Stockings don't feel like they are there at all. The stockings also feature a closedtoe design, which is ideal for increasing the level of comfort on your feet.

How Do the Stockings Hold Up?

The stockings hold up with an elasticated band around the thigh, and with frequent washing the band alone should be sufficient. However, you can also use adhesive tape to ensure they remain in place.

How Discreet Are the TED Anti-Embolism Stockings?

One concern in wearing TED Anti-Embolism Stockings is their discreetness, as users don't want thick bulgy stockings being visible through tight clothes. The material is designed to be thin and flexible, meaning that you can barely notice that they are compression stockings at all. This level of discreetness is ideal for anyone who is socially conscious.

How Do I Care for My Anti-Embolism Compression Stockings?

Caring for your Anti-Embolism Stockings can greatly improve the length of their life, especially as dirt and debris can begin to damage the stockings if they are not washed. Please note that oils, lanolin and similar substances may deteriorate the material. Should you want to wash your stockings, you should adhere to the following instructions:

  1. They may be washed with light goods in temperatures that don't exceed 71°C.
  2. Avoid excessive bleach.
  3. They may be tumble dried with temperatures reaching 121°C over a 15 to 20 minute period.

When Should I Not Wear the Anti-Embolism Compression Stockings?

In some instances the Anti-Embolism Compression Stockings are not suitable to be worn. This includes users who suffer from:

  • Dermatitis
  • Vein ligation
  • Gangrene
  • Recent skin graft
  • Severe vascular diseases such as arteriosclerosis
  • Massive edema
  • Leg deformity

They are the true TED stockings I would suggest you will need the applicator to put them on as you need to have pop eye muscles plus when legs are old then they hurt so the applicator is needed

I got the name of this supplier of this sort of product from a pair of support socks that were given to me in a recent hospital visit. They are not such a fight to get on as other, similar items, but still feel like they do the required job. I will be buying more in the near future.

Hi Janet,

Thank you for leaving your thoughts. I'm sorry to hear your having trouble with donning the stockings.

I can recommend that we do have a product for making stockings easier to put on: Sigvaris Rolly Compression Garment Aid.

I hope that this information helps.

Best wishes,

Alex at Health and Care
