Types of Arm Slings: How to Find the Right One

Thursday, 13 December 2018

If you've suffered an upper body injury around the shoulder or arm, you will probably require an arm sling. Slings are a simple yet effective medical device. Their primary purpose is to stabilise the area so the injured part can rest and not get irritated by excessive movement.

Here at Health and Care, we deal with some of the UK's leading manufacturers of rehabilitative equipment. As a result, our knowledge of arm slings is pretty broad. In this helpful guide to the different Types of Arm Slings, we're going to look the best slings for specific injuries and conditions to help you find the right one. If you're looking for something in particular, here's what we're going to cover:

Best Sling for Forearm Fractures, Sprains, Strains and Broken Bones

Procare Blue Vogue Arm Sling

Procare Blue Vogue Arm Sling

Why We Love It...

Comfortable polycotton material, very well made
Two inch thick padded strap adds to wearer security
Immobilises and supports shoulder, arm, wrist and hand

Ideal For...

 General everyday use
People suffering from fractures, sprains and broken bones
Supporting your custom cast to ensure full protection

Not the Best For...

 Moderate fractures including post-surgery
 Injuries affecting the shoulder

Editor's Review: The ProCare Arm Sling is the number one choice if you're suffering from fractures, sprains and strains. This standard sling is exceptionally well made, blending polyester and cotton for a good level of user comfort. What's especially useful about the ProCare is the extra security you get with the two inch thick padded foam strap. You can adjust the sling to your liking using the contact closure and D-Rings.

Alternate Choice: If you don't like the look of the ProCare, the Boscombe Double Arm Sling is another great choice for sprains and strains.

Best Sling for Serious Arm Fractures and Shoulder Injuries

ProCare Clinical Shoulder Immobiliser Arm Sling

ProCare Clinical Shoulder Immobiliser Arm Sling

Why We Love It...

Easy to use, thumb loop is a highly practical feature
Contact closure adjustment prevents painful shoulder rotations
Comfortable polycotton soothes aches and pains

Ideal For...

 Rest and full immobilisation
Supporting your elbow to prevent knocks and scuffs
More serious fractures and shoulder dislocations

Not the Best For...

 Collarbone injuries
People who want a less restrictive support

Editor's Review: The ProCare Clinical Shoulder Immobiliser Arm Sling is a quality sling with an adjustable shoulder pad and body straps. This shoulder immobiliser is a great choice for anyone suffering from serious to moderate shoulder injuries and fractures, as it can be adjusted to completely restrict the injured side of your body. I wouldn't suggest this sling to anyone suffering from minor strains, as the Blue Vogue Arm Sling offers more freedom of movement - but the ProCare Clinical definitely makes you feel protected.

Additional Care: Shoulders, especially injuries to the rotary cuff, can take a long time to heal. Our Dura Soft Shoulder Ice Pack can speed things up.

Best Sling for Repetitive Strain Injury and Shoulder Injuries

Rolyan Deluxe Shoulder Immobiliser

Rolyan Deluxe Shoulder Immobiliser

Why We Love It...

 Very comfortable neck pad
Waist strap limits shoulder movement to improve recovery
Can be adjusted to make your perfect fit

Ideal For...

 Repetitive strain injury (RSI)
 Dislocated shoulders
 Injuries requiring gradual rehabilitation

Not the Best For...

Sleeping at night as straps are quite big (Our Solution)
 Those who want full movement

Editor's Review: Like the ProCare Clinical, the Rolyan Deluxe Shoulder Immobiliser is an elevated shoulder immobiliser sling, only geared towards those suffering from repetitive strain injury (RSI). What makes the Rolyan great for long-term rehabilitation is its level of adjustability. Most components are fully adjustable, allowing the wearer to gradually ease the restrictive elements over time. Although this sling is comfortable, we wouldn't wear it to bed, so we'd recommend using a lighter sling, like the Universal Pro. Alternatively, the Harley White Bed Wedge Pillow can help you achieve a semi-inclined position to prevent further injury.

Additional Care: Shoulders, especially injuries to the rotary cuff, can take a long time to heal. Our Dura Soft Shoulder Ice Pack can speed things up.

Best Sling for Collarbone Injuries

Universal Pro Collar and Cuff Sling

Universal Pro Collar and Cuff Sling

Why We Love It...

Convenient, lightweight design for use at work and at home
Velcro fastening makes for quick and easy application and removal
Highly comfortable, especially around the neck area

Ideal For...

Everyday use, at home and in the office
 Broken collarbones and wrist injuries
People who want a more lightweight sling

Not the Best For...

 Serious to moderate shoulder injuries
 Those who require greater adjustability

Editor's Review: The Universal Pro Collar and Cuff Sling is a collar-and-cuff style sling that supports the neck and elevates the wrist to provide your collarbones with optimal comfort. Whilst the Universal Pro's minimal design might not be what everyone is after, this is a best-bang-for-your-buck model that will beat most standard slings supplied by hospitals.

Best Sling for Less Serious Arm Injuries

High Arm Sling

High Arm Sling

Why We Love It...

Allows for maximum movement while still protecting your injury
Highly adjustable thanks to its Velcro and waist strap fasteners
Easy to put on with one hand

Ideal For...

 Minor sprains, aches and pains
 Recurring pains from overuse
Stiffness along the forearm and shoulder

Not the Best For...

Ventilation - we'd recommend removing the sling every now and then
More serious injuries like shoulder dislocations etc.

Editor's Review: Lightweight and versatile, the High Arm Sling is a collar-and-cuff style sling like the Universal Pro, and offers an exceptional level of support for sprains, aches and pains. The High Arm is made from a combination of nylon and foam and is designed for long-term use. It's a great device to just have at home for whenever you're feeling stiff or sore. The one downside is that the sling can get a bit warm, but the High Arm can be removed easily with just one hand.

Our Conclusion

Even with the correct diagnosis from a doctor, it can be hard to decide what the best arm sling is for your specific injury. However, we sell thousands of arm slings every year, and by drawing on both customer feedback and the latest medical research we are able to make accurate recommendations.

If you're undecided and looking for an all-round best sling, we would definitely recommend the ProCare Blue Vogue Arm Sling. There's a lot of comfort to be had with this sling and it offers a fantastic level of support for the price you pay.
