Keeping Cool in Hot Weather 2021

Monday, 14 December 2020  |  Paul

It seems like we wait all year round for summer, then when the hot weather does finally arrive, we complain that it’s too hot! As heatwaves pass and the summer weather continues, how do we keep ourselves cool?

Keeping Cool in Hot Weather

How Does Increased Temperature Affect the Body?

Summer weather and rising temperatures can affect our bodies in various ways, including:

  • Overheating: An obvious one but very common, overheating symptoms can include hot skin, dizziness and nausea
  • Heat Exhaustion: When the body’s temperature reaches over 38°C, heatstroke can kick in. Signs of this are pale and sweaty skin and fast breathing
  • Heatstroke: Heatstroke is the result of body temperature reaching over 40°C. Symptoms include a lack of sweating, rapid heartbeat and fast and shallow breathing

Who is Most at Risk During Hot Weather?

We can all get hot and bothered during soaring temperatures and heatwaves, but some groups of people are more vulnerable, in particular, those aged over 75. This is because, as we get older, our body has more trouble maintaining its core temperature of 36°C to 37.5°C and we might not be aware that we’re overheating, so dehydration is more likely.

What Can I Do to Keep Myself Cool?

  • Drink plenty of fluids: Ensure that you drink plenty of water, but avoid excess alcohol, as well as soft drinks, as both of these decrease the likelihood of a good night’s sleep. As if it wasn’t hard enough to sleep in the summer!
  • Keep windows closed: Hear me out, I know that as soon as hot weather hits, our first instinct is to throw the windows wide open. However, during the day (and especially if the window is exposed to the sun), the air outside is often hotter than indoors, so opening the window is just letting the hot air into the room. As the temperature at night drops, opening windows can often help
  • Keep out of the heat: It can be tempting to want to embrace the hot weather as it isn’t with us all that often, but the hottest time of day is between 11am and 3pm, so this is the time we are most likely to overheat
  • Take cool showers: Having a cold shower as often as necessary works wonders for keeping you cool, especially at night before going to bed
  • Plan your outfit carefully: Wearing light and loose-fitting clothes absorb less heat and allow air to get to your body, while a hat will shade your head from the heat and also prevent sunburn
  • Put clothes and bedding in the freezer: This tip is particularly useful on hot nights when you’re struggling to sleep. Remember to put items in a carrier bag before freezing, otherwise, they could come out smelling of whatever food is in there!

Is There Anything Else I Can Do?

Maybe you’re lying on your frozen duvet, surrounded by half empty glasses of water with the fan blasting, but still sweating buckets. So, what measures can you take next?
