Get Rid of Your Hayfever!

The smell of freshly cut grass is, for some people is the smell of summer, but for 1 in 5 hay fever sufferers in the UK it is the worst smell ever. It means excessive sneezing, a runny nose and itchy, red eyes which can be highly stressful and make everyday tasks a lot more taxing.

I’ve suffered from hay fever ever since I can remember and every summer I search for new ways of preventing a relieving the symptoms. Getting the itching eyes and blocked nose can be so stressful, and because your stressing this makes it worse, it’s a viscous cycle, but relax and read my top tips for summer.

·         Medication. Take your hay fever tablets regularly, even when you think the pollen count is low enough for you to get away with not taking it, or if you feel okay. These tablets are far better at preventing the symptoms than relieving them.

·         Sunglasses. When it comes to sunglasses, the bigger the better as these will act as a guard against pollen floating into your eyes, especially when you are walking around.

·         Vasaline. This may sound like a weird one, but I find this method better than any nose spray I’ve tried. Put a little Vasaline around your nostrils and (sorry!) up your nose, it doesn’t have to be a lot and you can’t really see it. Like sunglasses, Vasaline prevents pollen getting up your nose and trapping it before it has a chance to affect you.

·         Decongestant. When my symptoms are really bad, it almost feels like I’ve got the flu with really sore and achy sinuses. Using a cold or flu remedy will help relieve this, always check the label and with your GP.

·         Wash your hair. After being outside, make sure you shower and wash your hair. Pollen easily clings to hair and if you go straight to bed this is bound to irritate you during the night. Also changing your clothes is a good idea.

·         Tumble dry. I know this is perfect weather for drying laundry outside but this is a definite No No for hay fever sufferers as this will expose all your clothes and bedding to pollen. Dry clothes indoors if necessary.

·         Bedtime. For some, getting a good night’s sleep feels impossible when you have hay fever. Make sure all the windows are closed to prevent pollen blowing in and take drowsy versions of hay fever tablets; these will help you drift off. If you’re worries about getting too hot, use a fan or we have Cooling Pillow or Mattress Toppers which will be more effective than having a window open anyway.

I hope these tips help and hopefully given you at least 1 or 2 more things to try. We have a few select products on our website which are designed for sufferers like you and me, please see our top pick below and enjoy your summer!
