Do I Need a CBD Prescription?
Friday, 29 March 2019
You may have seen cannabis oil or hemp oil in the news during the past year as a newly legal product available to a minority of patients through a prescription. However, CBD (cannabidiol) oil is distinct from cannabis oil – at least not the kind being talked about in those news stories – and is not a medication available through prescription.
What is Cannabis Oil?
Cannabis oil refers to a broad selection of oil products, some completely legal and some restricted, that are derived from the plant cannabis. The cannabis products being talked about for treating medical conditions like childhood epilepsy or pain due to cancer generally contain high amounts of THC (tetrahydrocannabinol, the restricted element of cannabis which is responsible for its "high") and require prescriptions. Even these prescriptions are only given in the case that other treatments have been found ineffective.
But cannabis oil can refer to much more than these high THC oils. In the past oils that contain almost no CBD or THC have been sold as 'cannabis oil', which is why it's important to always check the amount of CBD in a CBD product you are purchasing.
What is the Difference Between Cannabis Oil, Hemp Oil and CBD Oil?
Since CBD oil is extracted from the cannabis plant, it is technically a kind of cannabis oil, but it is not the kind of cannabis oil that has recently become medically legal in certain situations. CBD oil is derived from hemp, a variety of the cannabis plant with extremely low THC content (less than 0.2%). As a result CBD oil contains near to no THC.
Terms like CBD oil and hemp oil can be used broadly interchangeably, but generally CBD oil refers to a specific or full spectrum extract - containing CBD and other cannabinoids other than THC - whereas hemp refers to a whole plant extract - containing additional waxes and oils from the plant. "Hemp oil" that contains neither CBD oil or THC oil is also sold for cooking.
While in the strictest sense they are oils derived from the cannabis plant, hemp oil and CBD oil are almost never called cannabis oil, and any product described as such should be treated with suspicion.
Does Hemp Oil Require a Prescription?
If hemp or CBD oil does not contain THC, it is not restricted under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971. This means that it is completely legal to sell, buy, possess and use without a prescription. All our CBD products are completely THC free and not subject to prescriptions.
