The Donjoy Difference

PASSIVE VS. DYNAMIC BRACES
There are two differing approaches to brace design – passive and dynamic. Passive brace designs don’t actively address instabilities, which allows the knee to move, or translate, before the brace takes effect – resulting in a greater chance of injury. Donjoy’s dynamic design, 4-Points-of-Leverage System, continually addresses instabilities at all times, whether a patient is running, jumping, or standing.
DonJoy pioneered dynamic bracing with the 4-Points-of-Leverage System, a unique cuff and strapping configuration that provides a net differential posterior force to the tibia, preventing anterior movement. The center of the hinge is just posterior to the midline and just superior to the joint line. This allows points 1 and 3 to compress soft tissue, isolating the femur and bringing it forward. Points 2 and 4 draw the tibia posterior, generating a net differential force, or constant load, directly over the tibia, preventing it from moving forward. The result is significantly reduced strain on the ACL.

Standard Polycentric VS Fourcepoint
Most functional braces incorporate standard polycentric hinges that connect the thigh and calf frames through multi-centered pivot points. They provide a stabilizing force to the brace while attempting to mimic the knee’s natural movements.
Donjoy has taken hinge design and ACL protection to another level with its patented FourcePoint technology. FourcePoint is the only hinge design that’s clinically proven to protect the ACL.2 It enhances Donjoy’s 4-Points-of-Leverage System by dampening knee-joint extension and improving the overall mechanical performance of the brace, increasing flexion angles (5°)2 while simultaneously reducing shear forces (9%-13%) 3 at the knee. The FourcePoint hinge utilizes a leaf spring mechanism that gradually applies adjustable resistance (0, 1, 2, 4, and 6 lbs.) that engages in the last 25° of extension, reducing time spent in the “at-risk” position (flexion angles < 60°).4 As for prophylactic benefits, a recent clinical study shows athletes who trained wearing a DonJoy 4-Points-of-Leverage brace equipped with a FourcePoint hinge were estimated to decrease their chance of non-contact ACL injury by over 50%.5 That’s confidence every athlete can count on.
