What Is the Purpose of the ETDRS LogMAR Chart?

The ETDRS logMAR type eye-test is designed to measure visual acuity (i.e., a patient's clarity of vision in relation to their distance from the chart), and assess low-vision. This original chart design is suitable for use by optometrists and similar eye-care specialists, doctors, and vehicle licensing agencies, as well as for use in clinical studies. 

The format of this chart includes rows of 5 Sloan optotype letters, which decrease in size down the chart, and is designed for visual acuity testing at a 2.5-metre distance.
