How to Use an E-Cigarette

Tuesday, 28 June 2016  |  Alex

If you're a smoker, one of the things that might be holding you back from using an e-cigarette is the fact that you just don't know how they work. While the high end vaporisers that some people have (the types that are bulky and seem to make a lot of vapour) can be quite complicated to use, the everyday humble e-cigarette couldn't be simpler. Want to know more? Well we've taken the time to go through the process step-by-step so we can guide you all the way to enjoying your e-cigarette!

Unboxing Your Device

A standard e-cigarette starter kit

The first part of using an e-cigarette is choosing the right starter kit. Here at Health and Care, we have a wide selection of brands to choose from including Nicolites, Vype, E-Lites and Vapourlites. Whichever brand you choose is mostly a matter of personal preference – most electronic cigarettes work in the same way.

For our demonstration kit, we picked a standard model. As you can see in the image below, included with the pack is a battery (the white component), two refill cartridges (the terracotta coloured components) and a USB charger. The contents of specific kits may vary slightly but they will usually include variations of these basic components.

What's included with this kit

Removing All Packaging

Once you've opened and unboxed your e-cigarette kit, the next step towards using your device is removing any packaging that is around the individual components. To prevent anyone from tampering with your e-cigarette after it has been manufactured, most e-cigarettes are supplied with individually wrapped pieces. Be sure to remove this packaging and any other packing (such as the protective caps demonstrated below) prior to using your e-cig.

Assembling Your E-Cigarette

Once you have removed the packaging from all of your components (though if, like in this kit, there are multiple cartridges you may wish to leave them unopened for safety purposes), you can begin assembling the completed e-cigarette. This is very easy to do and all it requires is for you to screw the refill cartomiser into the battery as demonstrated in the image below.

Screwing the cartridge into the battery

Please note that this assembly should not require the use of any tools or any great force. If you fear that your electronic cigarette is in any way damaged it is imperative that you not use it.

Enjoying Your E-Cigarette

Once your e-cigarette has been assembled, it is ready for instant use – it's really that simple! To operate your e-cigarette, simply take a drag on it in the same way you would a traditional cigarette and the device should automatically activate. If it does not activate, the battery may need to be charged, which can be done by simply attaching the battery (the white component) to the USB charger and plugging it in to your computer's USB port (see below).

How Do I Know When to Change My Cartridge?

It's obvious when your e-cig is out of battery – it will simply not work any more – but it is a little bit more complicated trying to discern whether or not you need to change your cartridge. As refill cartridges reach the end of their life, the insides begin to singe and this can cause a slight burning taste; if you taste this, it's time to change your cartridge.

Is This It?

Yep, this pretty much sums up just how easy it is to use an e-cigarette. Though some people have a notion that electronic cigarettes are overly-complicated or fiddly to use, this couldn't be further from the truth. Once you are used to them, it takes no more time to change a cartridge than it does to light a cigarette!
